A building that was always full
Old soul is the building: 1960 concrete and render, a plan drawn for students, a stairwell that has heard six decades of arrivals. New life is everything inside it — renovated, refurnished, and run as a hotel since November 2025.
That is the whole of it. Academy Hotel is simple, Lappish, honest and approachable, and it is not luxury. The house does not promise to make your trip effortless; it promises that what you see when you book is what you get when you arrive.

A seminary dormitory
The house was completed in 1960 as a dormitory for the Kemijärvi teachers' seminary. Everything about the plan follows from that: honest rectangular rooms, large windows, wide stairwells, and shared kitchens on every floor because that is how a house full of students eats.
- After the seminary
A vocational school dormitory
When the seminary years ended the building kept doing the same work for a different school. Decade after decade it housed people who had come here to learn something, and the building was never asked to be anything more decorative than that.

A hotel
In 2025 the building was renovated and completely refurnished for hotel use. It reopened on 20 November 2025 and is now open year-round. The rooms are new; the house is not.

What we kept, what we replaced
A renovation is a set of decisions about what not to touch.
Kept
- The proportions — an honest rectangle and a big window in every room.
- The stairs. There is no lift, and adding one would have meant cutting the house apart.
- The dormitory habits: a fully equipped shared kitchen on every accommodation floor, and a sauna in the cellar.
- The building's history, shown on the walls of the shared spaces in pictures and stories.
Renewed
- Everything you touch: beds, mattresses, textiles, furniture.
- The shower and toilet rooms, room by room.
- Keyless entry, so arriving works at any hour without a reception queue.
- Free Wi-Fi throughout the house, and a guest laundry.

The night the sign was lit
The hotel opened in the dark half of the year, which is the honest way to open a house in Lapland.
Ice lanterns in the yard, the sign lit for the first time, and live music in the restaurant hall. Filmed by the house.

Where it stands
A house in the north
Kemijärvi is Finland's northernmost town. The lake it is named after is among the largest in the country, the Kemijoki running through it is Finland's longest river, and for roughly a month across June and July the sun never sets. In midwinter it does not rise at all, and the days pass in blue twilight instead.
The hotel stands on Seminaarinkatu — the street is named after the seminary this building served. The railway station is a ten-minute walk away, and the night train from Helsinki terminates here. Read about Kemijärvi or look at the rooms.
